Can Blankets be Washed in the Washing Machine?

Blankets are the savior of the winter months, like a little child who wants to pull you into his arms at any moment with their warming softness. Unfortunately, your blankets, which you don't want to get out from under on cold mornings, cannot withstand such frequent use and can get dirty. Body fluids secreted during sleep can contaminate the unprotected blanket and cause it to emit a bad odor after a while. For this reason, it is the healthiest choice to wash and remove all blankets after winter use, even if it is not frequent. Single blankets can be machine washed without arousing suspicion due to their size, which fits easily into the washing machine. If your double blankets are made of wool, they probably won't fit in your washing machine. However, you can wash fiber, cotton double blankets in your machine. First of all, if there is any stain on your blanket, you should remove it before placing it in your washing machine. Otherwise, your blanket, which will be in the machine for a long time, may absorb the stain completely into its densely woven fabric and your stain may never come out again. You can now place your single or double blanket in the washing machine after working on the stain. But how? How many degrees to wash the blanket? Let's take a look together...

-You should wash your blankets at the lowest possible temperature. Hot temperatures can destroy the structure of densely woven products. You can wash your blankets at a maximum of 30 degrees.

-The spin speed of your machine should not be above 600. Even at 30 degrees, blankets that shrink and wrinkle with heat will completely lose their softness when exposed to the spinning process for a long time.

-If your blankets are wool, you should make sure to select the appropriate program.

How to keep blankets clean?

Using your blankets, which provide you with a warm home in cold weather, together with the appropriate duvet covers is undoubtedly the first step in keeping them clean. Duvet covers are the most important textile products that can prevent your body fluids from getting into your blanket, prevent daily dirt and dust from sticking to it or prolong the contamination period. Blankets, which are preferred in winter and fall, are not washed frequently due to the humid weather. Because it takes quite a while to dry. However, this does not prevent you from airing your blanket occasionally. Airing your blanket once a week or every 2 weeks by hanging it on your balcony will sweep away all the dust that can be cleaned by the wind. By taking these steps to extend the life of your blanket, you will have a breathable product. Despite frequent airing or use with duvet covers, blankets can still get dirty. In this case, you can use the hand wash method or wash your blankets in your washing machine.

How to Clean a Yellowing Blanket?

Blankets that maintain the warmth of your bed for many years may turn yellow after a while due to use. This does not necessarily mean that you are using your blanket dirty. Weather conditions, washing methods, wet conditions can be the main cause of yellowing. Even without all these, fiber, wool or cotton fabric used for a long time can turn yellow. Although it may seem easy to wash your blanket in the washing machine in case of yellowing, unfortunately it is not a solution. First of all, we recommend that you ventilate your yellowing blanket for at least 2 hours to allow the weaving gaps to open. If you have a bathtub, you can place your blanket, which has left itself and loosened, in your bathtub, if not, you can place it on your balcony, where you can close the drain after cleaning it, by filling it with some water. Laundry detergent is a very difficult chemical to separate from the fabric. It is important to use natural products instead of laundry detergent in your hand-washed blanket. You should leave your blanket, on which you will sprinkle cleaning products such as soap and baking soda, in water for at least 15 minutes. After waiting, you can pour the baking soda on the yellowing parts of your blanket and scrub it with your hands. If you think the stains are gone, it is now possible to proceed to a normal cleaning phase. At this stage, you can wash your blanket in your washing machine at a temperature of 30 degrees and 600 rpm, or you can continue to hand wash your blanket by squeezing the water with your feet. Your blanket will be heavy and wet, whether it comes out of the low-speed spin cycle of your washing machine or the water you wring out. You should be careful to lay it under sunlight as much as possible. For this reason, it is of course possible to say that the best time for blanket cleaning is the arrival of summer.
